The perception, governance and functioning of hydrosystems have changed significantly in recent decades. This is particularly true in the Upper Rhine Valley, which is characterised by

  • A high human density and numerous anthropic activities,
  • An exceptional diversity of aquatic environments, from the headwaters of the mid-mountain basins to the alluvial plain and its aquifer,
  • Particularly alarming forecasts of bio-geophysical changes, including climate change.

The research strengths related to water on the Alsatian university site are remarkable, suggesting a strong potential for the development of interdisciplinary research in sustainability sciences in this field.

The sustainability of socio-hydrosystems in a context of global change is based on three interlocking levels of organisation:

  • Upper Rhine transboundary river socio-hydrosystems
  • Socio-hydrosystems of the alluvial plain and adjacent catchment areas
  • Urban socio-hydrosystems

This seminar has provided an opportunity to discuss current research activities and projects that are being initiated or are in the process of being initiated by the Alsatian academic site in the field of water. It has also gave Alsatian research groups the opportunity to present their current and future work. This seminar was also an opportunity for the research players to discuss the latest actions carried out, to imagine possible synergies and to address current issues. Although this first meeting focused on research at the level of the Alsatian academic site, it is planned to involve the partners of the Upper Rhine and all the actors concerned at future meetings.

This conference is organised by the Researche Initiative in sustainability and the environnment, University of Strasbourg (RISE), in partnership with the Urban Environmental Workshop Zone (ZAEU) and the Fessenheim Man-Milieu Observatory (OHM).
